We provide training, advice and resources for schools and manage the School Streets scheme to encourage active, sustainable and safe travel.

Primary school training & workshops

An introductory session based in the classroom followed by up to two practical roadside sessions.

Scooter Training

An introductory session in the classroom followed by practical sessions either in the playground or using local roads.

Bikeability Training

Bikeability teaches key cycling skills and builds pupils’ confidence for cycling on roads.

Secondary school training & workshops

Road Safety Assembly (Year 7 & 8)

Usually delivered to a whole school, these can focus either on general road safety issues or be tailored to address a specific issue within your school. This is particularly useful after transition to secondary school.

New Driver Workshop (Year 12 & 13)

A road safety workshop for new drivers, students learning to drive and passengers of new drivers.

To book any of our training or workshops, or for more information contact us on 0113 378 7306 or road.safety@leeds.gov.uk.

School Streets

The School Streets scheme restricts traffic outside primary schools at opening and closing times. Drivers can’t access these roads and parents can’t drive into these streets to drop off or pick up children. This encourages families to walk or cycle to school, or to leave their car at a safer location and finish the journey on foot. This scheme will significantly reduce congestion around the school gates, protect children and improve air quality.

Use the School Streets Map to find out which schools are part of the scheme, and an alternative parking spot with a safe walking, cycling or scooting route.

We’re planning to expand the scheme to other suitable schools. To find out more email us at schoolstreets@leeds.gov.uk.

School Active Travel Plans

The aim of a school active travel plan is to promote sustainable and active travel. 98% of schools in Leeds have an approved school travel plan. For help implementing your active travel plan, email schooltravelplans@leeds.gov.uk. Our team can help you achieve Modeshift STARS accreditation.

Modeshift STARS is the Centre of Excellence for the delivery of Effective Travel Plans in Education, Business and Community settings. The STARS Education scheme recognises schools and other educational establishments that have shown excellence in supporting cycling, walking and other forms of sustainable and active travel.
