2022 Events Calendar

We organise events throughout the year to promote active and sustainable travel. Here are some dates for your calendar.

15 February: Act TravelWise: Annual Conference 2022.

The theme of this year’s conference is Sustainable Transport 2022; Recovery and Progress. Join the conference speakers to discuss recovering from the pandemic and progressing actions from COP26 as we head into 2022.

21 March – 1 April: Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel

Sustrans Big Pedal is back but it’s got a new name. Sustrans Big Walk and Wheel is the UK’s largest inter-school walking, wheeling, scooting and cycling challenge. It aims to inspire hundreds of thousands of pupils to get active on the school run. 

May: National Walking Month

Living Streets promote the benefits of leaving the car at home and walking for shorter journeys with their #WalkThisMay campaign.

17 – 21 May: Walk to School Week

Walk to School Week is a campaign by Living Streets, celebrating the benefits of walking to school.

17 – 23 May: UN Global Road Safety Week

The United Nations Global Road Safety Week focuses on leadership for road safety. It is widely acknowledged that stronger leadership for road safety is needed to achieve the Global Goals. 

3 June: UN World Bicycle Day

World Bicycle Day draws attention to the benefits of the bicycle — a simple, affordable, clean and environmentally fit sustainable means of transportation.

6 June – 12 June: Cycling UK Bike Week

Bike Week is an annual event celebrating the benefits of cycling for leisure and as a mode of transport. To find out what we did for Bike Week 2021, click here.

16 June: National Clean Air Day

Clean Air Day raises awareness of air pollution and how we can improve air quality. Transport is one of the leading causes of air pollution, so in 2021 we collaborated with Clean Air Leeds to organise an event in the city centre. Click here to learn more.

22 June: Brake’s Kids Walk

Brake’s Kids Walk is a great way to inspire and engage children about the dangers they face and raise awareness among parents and the wider community about the need to protect children on roads. It’s also a great opportunity to fundraise for Brake and support families who have lost loved ones in road crashes.

August: National Road Victims Month

Organised by RoadPeace, National Road Victims Month promotes road safety, supports crash victims and pays tribute to loved ones killed on the roads.

4 August: National Cycle to Work Day

Cycle to Work Day encourages people to commute by bike. The event celebrates the benefits of active travel and campaigns for better bike storage at workplaces.

September: Scootember

Scootember is our annual scooter festival, celebrating the joy of scooting. Every year, our dedicated team of road safety trainers visit schools across Leeds to teach scooter workshops. To learn more, visit https://bit.ly/ScootemberHighlights

13 – 17 September: Project EDWARD

Project EDWARD (Every Day Without A Road Death) is an annual UK-wide road safety campaign backed by government, the emergency services, highways agencies, road safety organisations and British businesses.

16 – 22 September: European Mobility Week

EUROPEANMOBILITYWEEK is the European Commission’s flagship awareness-raising campaign on sustainable urban mobility. It encourages behavioural change in favour of active mobility, public transport and other clean, intelligent transport solutions.

22 September: World Car Free Day

World Car Free Day is a chance to re-imagine streets as vibrant community spaces, designed for people instead of cars. The campaign also promotes the benefits of walking, cycling and using public transport. Click here for our event photo diary.

27 September – 1 October: Bike to School Week

Organised by Sustrans and the Bikeability Trust, Bike to School Week celebrates the benefits of active travel for children. It’s a great opportunity to highlight the positive impact cycling and scooting have on children’s health and wellbeing, as well as the environment.

October: Tyre Safety Month

This campaign highlights the importance of checking your tyres are safe to reduce the risk of road collisions. Find out more.

14 – 20 November: UK Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week aims to inspire thousands of schools, organisations and communities to take action on road safety and promote life-saving messages during the week and beyond. 

20 November: World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims 2022

This day focuses on the devastation caused by road deaths and injuries and the impact upon families and communities around the world.
