Organised by Sustrans and the Bikeability Trust, Bike to School Week celebrates the benefits of active travel for children. It’s a great opportunity to highlight the positive impact cycling and scooting have on children’s health and wellbeing, as well as the environment.
Top tips for parents
Want to cycle to school with your children but not sure how to get started? Here’s our advice…
1. Plan your journey
Take stress out of the school run by planning in advance. Knowing your route will help you and your children feel confident cycling at rush hour. If possible, stick to quiet roads and avoid steep hills.
2. Dress for adventure
Make sure your children are wearing helmets and sensible shoes for a safe journey. If it’s raining, wear a waterproof coat and reflective clothing.
3. Check your bikes are safe
Test the brakes, wheels and steering to see if they work correctly. The tyres should be pumped up and feel firm, handlebars should be straight, and the brakes should stop the bike easily.
