RTC STATISTICS OF 2018
In 2018, the number of road casualties in the district fell for the third consecutive year, reflected in all major road user categories. A total of 26 road users were killed in Leeds, 73% more than 2017 (15) and a total last seen in 2011 (26). This contributed to another rise in the number of those killed or seriously injured, which rose by 4% from 324 in 2017 to 337. Casualties among the most vulnerable road users (pedestrians, cyclists and motorbike riders) have barely improved in recent years, despite the encouraging reduction among pedestrians. Numbers of PTW riders and cyclists KSI rose in 2018. The number of children injured decreased for the second consecutive year, but the total number of children killed or seriously injured has barely changed in the last five years. Overall, collisions resulting in high severity injuries to all road users, but in particular to vulnerable road users, remain a priority that needs to be actively and appropriately addressed.

- The number of cyclist casualties for both all severities and those KSI has not reduced in the most recent three years.
- PTW KSI casualties continue to fluctuate in the district, while the reduction in the number of all severities has conslidated the dowward trend of the last five years.

Killed or Seriously Injured (KSI) Casualties

KSI trend of recent five years remain fairly flat despite the increase in 2018. The total number of those killed or seriously injured is sustained by the number of car occupant and vulnerable road users injured. Reducing road casualties amongst these groups will put the district in a strong position to meet the 2026 target.
