Influencing Travel Behaviour Summer 19 Newsletter for Schools

Issue 1 – Spring 2019

The Influencing Travel Behaviour Team (ITB) provides road safety  education and training to pupils, promotes sustainable travel and also helps schools to develop and implement their travel plans.

Whats have we been up to in Leeds?

Bike Friendly School

Co-op Academy Priesthorpe is the first secondary school in West Yorkshire to receive grant funding to become a Bike Friendly School from West Yorkshire Combined Authority.

The new cycle storage will accommodate more pupils and staff to cycle to and from school, and encourage more young people to travel  independently.

The scheme is targeted at schools such as Co-op  Academy Priesthorpe that are located near or on CityConnect routes. Co-op Academy Priesthorpe sits alongside the 23km Cycle Superhighway that connects Bradford to Leeds to  encourage cycle journeys on a predominantly off road cycle route.

“The new cycle storage and training will enable and encourage more pupils to cycle along the CityConnect route.  This will reduce the number of pupils travelling to school by car, which will benefit the surrounding area by creating a more pleasant and safer environment for pupils and the local community. “ Martin Blacoe, Principal, Priesthorpe

The Big Pedal 2019

Thank you to all the schools for taking part in The Big Pedal 2019. In total there were 2299 schools across the   country taking part and out of that, 36 were from Leeds which is            brilliant.

Well done Moortown Primary who came 38th out of 500 in the small school category! Also Otley All Saints for            completely emptying their car park as pupils, parents and teachers took part in the competition. White Laith Primary School also wrote a blog about The Big Pedal and took some great pictures! Check out their blog here.

Schools that took part, please tweet @saferroadsleeds your pictures, videos or blogs about your participation in The Big Pedal!

Walk to School Week – 20th-24th May 2019

#WalkThisMay and ‘Leaf’ your car at home.

Due to the decline in the number of children walking to school since 2017, Leeds Schools were invited to help turn the trees green this Walk to School Week and ‘leaf’ their cars at home.

To incentivise pupils to walk to school we will be offering £40 of              high-street vouchers per school to help you reward pupils who have taken part in this event.

To confirm your participation in this Walk to School Week activity and claim your £40 vouchers, please email by 17th May.

In addition, each participating school had a chance to WIN a fun day of activities delivered by Leeds City Council’s Road Safety Team. Send a photograph of your school tree (or the winning tree picked by your school) to by 14th June to be in with a chance of winning.

Remember taking part in Walk to school week will count towards your Modeshift STARS Accreditation (codes W6 or W16-18 and PR10 Social Media Campaign).
